Missed-call text back does one simple thing. When a call to your business goes unanswered, the caller gets a text from your business a few seconds later. They can reply right away, and the conversation comes to your phone.
How it works, step by step
- A customer calls your business and you cannot pick up.
- The system notices the call was not answered.
- It sends the caller a short text, such as: "Hi, this is [Business]. Sorry we missed your call. What can we help with?"
- The customer texts back with what they need.
- Their reply reaches your phone as a text, so you can answer between jobs.
You do not have to do anything for steps 2 and 3. That is the point.
Why a text and not voicemail
- Plenty of callers hang up without leaving a voicemail. A text reaches them anyway.
- The caller is already holding their phone. A text is the easiest thing for them to answer.
- You get the details in writing. An address, a photo of the leak or a model number is easier to read than to hear.
What it does not do
- It does not replace you. It holds the customer's attention until you can call or text back.
- It does not quote prices or promise times. You still do that.
- It only works if someone reads the replies. Pick set times to check, such as between jobs and at lunch.
What to check before you set one up
- It texts every missed call, including nights and weekends. After-hours calls are often the urgent ones.
- The text names your business. A text from an unknown number with no name looks like spam.
- Replies come to your cell phone. Not to an app or inbox you have to remember to open.
- Your number is registered for business texting. Phone carriers require businesses that text customers to register. Without it, texts can be blocked.
- You know what texts cost. Ask how texting is billed before you sign.
What to say in the text
Keep it to a sentence or two: your business name, a short sorry and one question. We wrote missed-call text templates for plumbers, HVAC companies and roofers you can copy.
Is it worth it for you?
That depends on how many calls you miss and what a job is worth to you. Put in your own numbers with the missed-call calculator. To see how it fits one trade, read about plumbing companies, or see the full missed-call text back page.
